On January 31st, VMTurbo will release Operations Manager 3.0, a significant new version of the Company’s Intelligent Workload Management Solution for cloud and virtual infrastructures. Operations Manager 3.0 delivers cloud-scale management for the largest service provider and enterprise virtual infrastructures, expanded hypervisor support, new application performance assurance capabilities, and enhanced capacity planning functionality. The product delivers this all from a single virtual appliance that installs in minutes and provides actionable, and automatable, recommendations to improve performance across the virtual environment immediately.

Major new capabilities in VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.0 include:

1.      Cloud-scale Management through vCloud Director integration.  VMware’s vCloud Director enables the consolidation of virtual infrastructure across multiple clusters or virtual datacenters in a multi-tenant environment. VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.0 allows IT operators to ensure performance and optimize utilization across this entire environment through a single management plane that understands the topology of the vCloud deployment, recognizes resource constraints within virtual datacenters, and automates reallocation to ensure performance.

2.      Single-instance, Multi-hypervisor Management – VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.0 adds Citrix XenServer support providing IT operators with the unique ability to manage XenServer, vSphere, and Microsoft Hyper-V from a single virtual appliance.

3.      Application-aware Service Assurance – VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.0 now discovers and profiles Windows applications across the virtual environment providing visibility to application performance and enabling IT Operators to prioritize resource requirements for mission-critical applications as a single entity – ensuring quality of service as demand fluctuates.

4.      Enhanced, Intelligent Capacity Planning – VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.0 utilizes the product’s deep understanding of workload performance characteristics and the physical environment to perform performance-based capacity analysis. This provides IT Operators with detailed performance planning scenarios configurable by future requirements and new hardware upgrades. The product also simulates configurations and validates expected performance over time taking into account workload policies and resource requirements.

I.       Broad multi-hypervisor support

VMTurbo announces an extension to our existing hypervisor coverage (vCenter & Hyper-V) to now include integrations for VMWare vCloud Director and support for Citrix XenServer. These enable unified management across heterogeneous hypervisor environments.

Connection to each hypervisor is through the standard connection interface.

Each Host is tagged by the hypervisor controlling it while optimization and planning strategies are common and applied to all hosts through a single pane of glass.

Staying with the topic of multi-hypervisor support, integration with VMWare vCenter just got easier with our new support for vCenter tags.

Once discovered, these entities are labeled in vCenter and managed in much the same way that natively ‘grouped’ entities are treated.

II.     Expanded Windows Application  Performance Management

It’s always about application performance. Users don’t open tickets for poorly performing VM’s, they call when there is a problem with their user experience. The best way to prevent this from happening is to be aware of the performance of all applications.

VMTurbo Operations Manager now automatically detects all windows-based applications and enable administrators to establish a priority that drive resource allocations and configuration tuning as demand fluctuates. In this release, it is also possible to define those processes that make up an application so that a previously disjointed collection of processes (e.g. Exchange) can now be managed as a single application.

Administrators are also able to identify the level of importance of an individual or group of applications

 III.  Enhanced Intelligent Capacity Planning

Validation checks  – Prior to starting any simulation run, VMTurbo now performs validation checks to ensure that (for instance), workload placement policies won’t prevent the added load being incorporated in the environment or perhaps that a specific added load (VM) will need access to resources not available in the environment.

Streamline Scenarios: Hardware Replacement
– When we work with customers to find out how they are using VMTurbo, we began to notice certain patterns. Specifically, when running simulations to determine their resource needs, virtualization architects would first, determine the resource demand levels for their current environments (optimized) and then project the VM load to a future date (and re-run the optimization to determine the most efficient resource levels). Finally, where there was a need to increase resource levels to meet QoS requirements, there was a common process of swapping out generic ‘hardware clones’ with vendor specific solutions. In this way, the architect is able to provide alternate vendor solutions to compare price/performance merits.

This entire workflow has been captured in the new planner layout, where a series of tabs walk the user through these steps and streamline the entire process. Not only now is ‘Performance Planning’ within VMTurbo a very insightful process, it is now that much more efficient.

IV.  Greater flexibility and control over the Economic Scheduling Engine

Within VMTurbo, the Economic Scheduling Engine is the driving force behind the recommendations made and actions being generated. The out of box settings deliver robust, directly actionable recommendations for most users. In some cases altering these settings can provide value – although in most cases it is not necessary. The 3.0 release exposes these controls to allow for specific constraints or requirements in virtualized environments. We do not recommend that you change these without first consulting a VMTurbo support technician.

These settings cover the following considerations:

  1. The time periods over which analyses are calculated
  2. The relative weightings of current peaks and averages vs. the rolling values
  3. Target optimization values
  4. The tolerances permitted when seeking these optimization goals.

V.    General Ease of Use enhancements

This next section contains a collection of enhancements that collectively stand as general usability improvements. If you have any suggestions for ways that you think the product could be improved, please forward them to enhancementrequest@vmturbo.com

  • Data Panels within VMTurbo can now be customized to show selective metrics

  • Any Chart, Graph, Time Line or Log with this symbol can be exported as XML for inclusion into (for instance) a data analysis tool
  • Any standard report may now be generated in Excel format. This greatly increases the value of certain reports such as the ‘Storage Wasted’ report. With Excel format export, it is now much easier to manage the archival or deletion of these files.
