Virtualized Applications: I am Talking to You!
In an earlier post we discussed some of the challenges in minimizing latencies between frequently communicating virtualized applications. On the one hand they need to stay closer to each other to avoid expensive trips over several hops of congested network devices. On the other hand the compute and storage fabric congestion requires spreading the simultaneously peaking VMs further apart from each other.
By talking to many owners of such applications and infrastructure administrators we realized that both camps are struggling in providing a good solution for this issue. In reality it all boils down either to defining static affinity rules and paying the price of introducing other bottlenecks or solving one congestion problem at a time while ignoring others.
