The State of the Open Container Initiative
There is a lot of challenge in the world of technology around finding standards. Everyone has one, and each has the same opinion: “If everyone would just adapt to our standard, we could all agree”.
So, what happens when you try to guide the path to a standard when there are two clearly leading options?
Are Containers the next VHS vs. Beta?
We’ve seen this before. VHS versus Beta. HD-DVD versus BluRay. In the end, one eventually rises to the top and becomes the more widely accepted standard. The challenge is getting to the point of finding that “more widely accepted” percentage of adoption. There are many, many software standards which continue to thrive even in the presence of similar products in the same space.
Because of the community-driven nature of Docker, Rocket, and LXC/LXD, we have conundrum. How do you tell one community that they need to switch to the alternate product or standard?
