The Citrix XenClient is not the best solution for BYOPC
The Citrix XenClient is not the best solution for the BYOPC concept. Although the Citrix XenClient is a great product and it can be used to separate your personal life and your work life on the same laptop, it is not the best solution for the BYOPC concept.
The end users want to be able to choose the laptop/device they like without the hardware requirements for the Intel vPro chipset or ‘ready for virtualization’ certification. You will find this kind of hardware only in the business models from venders like HP, Lenovo and Dell.
The reason that end users want to choose their own laptop/device is because they want to get rid of the boring looking business line laptops with limited functionality.
End users want to be able to choose a Apple MacBook Pro or a nice looking multimedia laptop with a large widescreen display, HDMI connector, FullHD playback, Gaming support etc.
The Citrix XenClient will be a good match for a lot of scenarios but is not ideal for the BYOPC concept.
In the article I wrote about implementing the BYPOC concept a few months ago I discussed how the BYPOC design would look like with and without the Citrix XenClient.
This was the picture I used in the article for explaining BYOPC without the Citrix XenClient:
This design was based on a Citrix Access Gateway to control the access to the corporate network. After I created this picture the VPX edition of the Citrix Access Gateway has been released. The VPX virtual appliance can be hosted on XenServer or VMWare ESX.
After login on to the CAG the end users will be able to start published corporate applications running on XenApp or start a Windows Desktop running on XenDesktop.
In most cases a hybrid Citrix environment with XenApp for the majority of the applications and remote desktops + a limited number of XenDesktop virtual desktops for power users and system administrators will be an ideal solution to give BYOPC users the flexibility they need.
End User Experience 2.0 = BYOPC device without hardware limitations + Citrix HDX technology with XenApp 6 and XenDesktop 5 anytime, anywhere!
For most end users the ultimate BYPOC laptop will probably be the Apple MacBook Pro.
