Terminal Server, Roaming Profile & File Types – Let’s Party!

Today I encountered an inquisitive situation which took much more time than it should have. A roaming profile user was recently converted from using a standard desktop PC, to accessing a Terminal Server via a thin client.  Out of nowhere the roaming profile seemed a little out-of-shape – Particularly within Microsoft Outlook 2003.

Scenario

When roaming profile user is logged into the terminal server and using Microsoft Outlook, when attempting to open Image files ie (JPG, GIF. PNG, BMP) the print function is launched. Rather than the image opening in an application such as Microsoft Office Picture Manager (ois.exe) the Attached files are printed to the default or selected printer.

Background

So, this scenario seems black & white – with no gray area – it is simply a File Types and default application issue, right? So, it seems multiple scenarios could play out, is it the Roaming Profile? the network shared User Desktop(s)? or is it File Types?
