Last spring, we noticed a theme taking root within enterprise IT. As organizations struggled to keep up with massive data growth incited by sensors and devices creating Internet of Things (IoT) or machine data, they found it increasingly difficult to move that data to the cloud. Instead, they were turning to fog computing – or edge computing, as Gartner dubbed it. These distributed architecture models help cut latency and keep machine data readily accessible for analysis and use.

Edge computing can also accelerate hybrid cloud deployments by augmenting traditional data center architecture. By placing content, compute and resources close to concentrations of users, organizations can provide users with better experiences. However, some companies still hesitate to adopt edge computing, questioning if the approach will simply waste time and resources.
