Stop Saying Future and Start Saying Next Steps
We are constantly inundated with the use of the word “future” in our lives. It comes in many forms such as these:
- Flash is the Future
- Public cloud is the Future
- NVMe is the Future
- SDN is the Future
- Flying cars are the Future
You can easily pick out one that looks out of place there, right? The funny thing is that it didn’t look out of place in 1957 when Popular Mechanics was showing the “inevitable” future 10 years away where flying cars would finally be a reality.
Time for a reality check.
Today’s Future is Tomorrow’s Legacy
While the pundits prepare to dance on the grave of spinning disk, let’s take a few moments to remember just how the story has played out over the last couple of decades. SCSI gained serious traction for DAS (Direct Attached Storage) and then was broadly used in SAN (Storage Area Networks). SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) made life easier, and SATA also jumped up in usage for slower storage.
