Solution: Oracle VM Server Reboots

By Roddy Rodstein 04/06/2015

This post is applicable to all Oracle VM Releases, Oracle Exadata X5-2, Oracle Exalogic, Oracle Database Appliance (ODA), and the Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance (VCA).
I’m Roddy Rodstein from Mokum. I have been supporting Oracle VM since Oracle VM’s very first release, in 2007. Since 2007, from my experience, the number 1 root cause of Oracle VM outages has been due to OCFS2 automatic server reboots. OCFS2 automatic server reboots occur due to storage or network interrupts, and by design OCFS2 responds to storage or network interrupts by rebooting the affected Oracle VM Servers. Unfortunately, the Oracle VM OCFS2 automatic server reboot functionally can not be disabled. Clustered Oracle VM Servers are subject to OCFS2 automatic server reboots during regular daily operations, and even during scheduled maintenance windows. For example, over the years we have supported many scheduled service windows maintaining server hardware, network and storage gear, and OCFS2 responds by rebooting Oracle VM Servers, along with rebooting business critical Oracle virtual machines. Fortunately there is a solution to eliminate OCFS2 automatic Oracle VM Server reboots. The solution is to design and deploy non-clustered Oracle VM Server Pools. Non-clustered Oracle VM Server Pools are a feature within the Oracle VM for x86 software distribution.
