SDS & HCI Post-Summer Update (+ early “welcome” to Pivot3)
You normally would expect the summer to be a quiet period, even for the IT industry. But market dynamics just won’t allow it so it would seem, at least when in comes to the SDS/HCI space. Apart from new software releases there was also the occasional company-related news that made the headlines during the summer holidays, both good and bad.
Starting with the latter: Atlantis, producer of both USX and HyperScale, reported major financial difficulties back in June. Although Hive-IO, another player in the software-defined datacenter space acquired Atlantis’ IP, technology and products towards the end of July, to this day the future of USX and HyperScale remains sketchy at best. On a more positive note: during the summer period Cisco both announced and completed the official acquisition of Springpath, the company it has worked with very closely on the HyperFlex platform, reaffirming Cisco’s commitment to HyperFlex and its overall strategy to transition to a software-centric vendor.
There were also quite a few software updates released during the past few months. Most updates concentrated on delivering support for the latest version of VMware’s and Microsoft’s hypervisor, or providing support for the latest server hardware catering the new Intel Skylake processors. There were some exceptions though, as you can read below in the list of changes.
Here are the most important changes in recent updates of our listing of SDS/HCI platforms:
