Scale Computing, a developer and manufacturer of intelligent, clustered storage solutions that are tailored to the needs of the small and medium-sized businesses (SMB), today announced that Mays Chemical, a fully integrated chemical distributor, has deployed Scale’s intelligent storage to complete its virtualization project. Scale’s S-Series, 4TB cluster has delivered a simple, scaleable, VMware Ready™ storage solution. In addition, Scale’s cost-effective storage, combined with VMware’s vSphere™ Essentials Kit, made Mays Chemical’s virtualization project an economic reality.

Mays Chemical is a fully integrated chemical distributor, recognized as an optimal source for chemicals, related raw materials, formulated products, chemical management expertise and outsourcing services. Mays Chemical services a variety of industries including: food and beverage, pharmaceutical, automotive, personal care, electronics and laboratory and healthcare. As the company’s servers aged, several new IT projects emerged that would require new hardware. Mays Chemical’s IT department concluded that virtualization was the best solution and began researching options to virtualize and consolidate the company’s servers.

“As a small business, our budget was more limited than that of a large enterprise. We knew that we wanted to virtualize our servers but were concerned about the costs associated with virtualization solutions and the necessary storage. VMware’s vSphere Essentials Kit was a cost-effective solution to consolidate our servers, but we needed to find a storage solution that had enterprise-level performance and power at a price that was within our budget,” said Tony Davitto, network administrator, Mays Chemical.

To implement virtualization, Mays Chemical needed a storage solution that was VMware Ready, economical, simple and scalable. Mays Chemical’s IT department narrowed the search to three vendors: HP LeftHand, Dell EqualLogic and Scale Computing. “After a thorough review of our top three vendors we ultimately selected Scale Computing’s S-Series cluster because it was the only option that provided all of the features that we needed at a price that fit comfortably within our budget,” said Keith Dix, IT manager, Mays Chemical.

Because Scale Computing is 100 percent channel, Mays Chemical’s IT department turned to Leonard-McDowell, a provider of sales and IT solutions. “While virtualization is an incredibly cost-effective technology, the price of the storage systems necessary to support virtualization can often prohibit SMBs from utilizing this technology,” said Frank Leonard, managing partner of Leonard-McDowell. “Scale’s Intelligent Clustered Operating System™ (ICOS) is standard with every product and provides parallel performance necessary for virtualization’s large and unpredictable workloads at an economical price.”

Mays Chemical deployed Scale Computing’s S1 storage cluster with 4 TB of usable storage. Since deploying Scale’s storage, Mays Chemical has nearly completed its virtualization project and has consolidated from 28 physical servers to just eight. Mays Chemical also realized cost savings as a result of selecting Scale as the company’s storage vendor. Not only was Scale’s hardware more economical, there was no need to hire an outside party to setup the storage.

“We found that with other storage vendors, it was necessary to hire a third party to setup and deploy the storage. With Scale, setup was simple and we were up and running within an hour. We were able to keep the entire project in house, ultimately saving thousands of dollars,” said Dix.
