Traditional rotating media storage systems excel at large, sequential access patterns, such as backup/restore or bulk data storage in 128KB or 1MB blocks. However, disk-based systems falter when delivering the random 8KB read or write operations
that hypervisors require. Flash storage can deliver tremendous 8KB throughput, albeit at a higher cost per gigabyte, but that sometimes moves the storage bottleneck from the media to the storage area network (SAN) fabric. Gigabit Ethernet presents an
obvious choke-point target, but Fibre Channel and 10 GbE links can become just as overloaded under the right circumstances.
