Optimizing Virtual Infrastructure Storage Systems with Xangati ESP Storage Solution Brief

IN SEARCH OF BETTER TOOLS FOR OPTIMIZING EXPANSIVE ENTERPRISE STORAGE

Virtualized infrastructures span servers, switches, storage systems and client devices. Of these four categories, storage systems are the most challenging to correctly size, configure and operate. That’s why IT administrators who manage complex virtual and
cloud environments rely on Xangati ESP. Xangati’s real-time monitoring and analysis platform provides unmatched, actionable insights around storage systems in virtualized environments and the entire end-to-end infrastructure.

Traditional rotating media storage systems excel at large, sequential access patterns, such as backup/restore or bulk data storage in 128KB or 1MB blocks. However, disk-based systems falter when delivering the random 8KB read or write operations
that hypervisors require. Flash storage can deliver tremendous 8KB throughput, albeit at a higher cost per gigabyte, but that sometimes moves the storage bottleneck from the media to the storage area network (SAN) fabric. Gigabit Ethernet presents an
obvious choke-point target, but Fibre Channel and 10 GbE links can become just as overloaded under the right circumstances.

Blended hard disk and flash/SSD arrays, often called “hybrid storage” architecture, promise to offer the best of both worlds: cost-effective, high-capacity media combined with NAND-based caching for maximum I/O transactions per second (IOPS). However,
the algorithms that govern disk-to-flash caching vary in their processes and effectiveness. This highly variable complexity drives the need for a tool that can allow IT administrators to work smarter and faster at identifying potential problem areas.

In a VMware environment, Xangati collects metrics on the IOPS, throughput and latency of many datastore types, including:

• Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) volumes residing on a SAN storage system connected via Fiber Channel, iSCSI, Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
• Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) volumes residing on locally attached disks
• A directory on a Network File System (NFS)-based NAS
