Microsoft May be Stacking the Odds in the Private Cloud Game


After owning the desktop for so long, and significant portions of the enterprise data center OS market, there was little doubt that Microsoft has everything to lose as competition rises against them on all fronts. Being the incumbent in desktop OS and productivity software has its advantages because it let Microsoft relax a bit on their innovation in that market. They risked a lot if they sat back though, and this drew the big push towards Office 365 and updated Windows offerings to keep ahead of the market so that customers would be less likely to delve into new territory to get the same features.

On the Server side, Microsoft has been dominating the server market for some time with no signs of slowing down. Despite the massive growth of Linux derivatives, the enterprise market tends to still favor the Windows Server platform for many areas of operations and development. Microsoft has even landed deals to bring Linux to the Azure
