8. 9.        How to Implement Server to Client Content Redirection

Server to Client Content Redirection allows for embedded URLs to be intercepted by the MetaFrame XP server and sent to the ICA Client using the ICA Control virtual channel. The users locally installed browser is used to play the URL. For example, when users access Web and multimedia URLs while running an email program published on a MetaFrame XP server, the web and multimedia content will now be opened with the Web browsers or multimedia players present on MetaFrame XP servers.

Server to Client Content Redirection is only supported on ICA Win32 and Linux Clients. The following URL types are support:

       HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

       HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

       RTSP (Real Player and QuickTime)

       RTSPU (Real Player and QuickTime)

       PNM (Legacy Real Player)

       MMS (Microsofts Media Format)

Note: Server to Client Content Redirection requires Internet Explorer Version 5.5 with Service Pack 2 if running on Windows 98 systems.

The following sections detail how to enable Server to Client Content Redirection.

8. 9. 1 How to Implement Server to Client Content Redirection Farm Wide

The following details how to specify server to client redirection on a farm with basis.

1.      Open the Management Console for MetaFrame XP and right click on the Farm click Properties

2.      Select MetaFrame XP Settings from the left pane and click to check the Enable Content Redirection from server to client checkbox and click OK.

8. 9. 2 How to Implement Server to Client Content Redirection per Server

The following details how to specify server to client content redirection on a per server basis.

1.      Right click on the MetaFrame XP Server you would to enable server to client content redirection and click Properties.

2.      Click the MetaFrame Sertting tab. In the Content Redirection From Server to Client section you will have the ability to configure how the server will deal with server to client content redirection. If you have defined content redirection at the farm level then verify the Use farm settings check box is selected. If you will be configuring content redirection on a server by server basis then uncheck the Use farm settings check box and click to select the Enable Content Redirection from server to client check box. If you have enabled content redirection on a farm basis and want to disable it on a specified server then uncheck the Use farm settings check box and uncheck the Enable Content Redirection from server to client checkbox. Click OK when finished.

8. 9. 3 How to Enable Server to Client Content Redirection on a User / Group Basis

Keeping with the goal of a farm that will be dynamic and easy to administer, the addition of MetaFrame XP policies gives us the ability to create a policy, assign a user group to it and then add users in order to enable server to client content redirection.

Note: This is how I recommend enabling content redirection. Ive always been a huge fan of user / group polices because it gives us the ultimate flexibility.

The following defines how to create a MetaFrame XP policy to enable Server to Client Content Redirection.

1.      Create a specific user global group to enable Enable Server to Client Redirection. i.e., Enable Server to Client Content Redirection

2.      Open the Management Console for MetaFrame XP, right click on Policies and click Create Policy.

3.      Enter a name for the new policy. I recommend something like Server to Client Content Redirection. Click OK when finish.

4.      Right click on the newly created policy and click Properties.

5.      Clcik to expand the Server Content Redirection folder

6.      Click to select the Content Redirection from Server to Client to Server policy. Click to select the Rule Enabled radio button Click to select the Use Server Content Redirection radio button. Click OK when finished.

7.      Right click on the policy created in the above steps and click Assign Users.

8.      Select the the user group created in step 1 and click OK when finished.

You have now successfully created a MetaFrame XP policy to enable the use of Server to Client Content Redirection. If you would like to enable a new user to use Server to Client Content Redirection, all you will need to do is add their users and or group to the global group created in step 1.
