6. Install MetaFrame XP

Now we are finial ready to get down and dirty and install MetaFrame on our first server.    This is where you will be creating and documenting the steps needed for MetaFrame XP installation.  This documentation will be followed for any additional servers and also serve as a portion of a disaster recovery plan.

6. 1.        How to Install MetaFrame XP on the First Server in the Farm

1.       Insert the Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Microsoft Windows CDROM and when prompted with the following installation screen, click the MetaFrame XP Setup button

2.       If you have removed Internet Information Services (IIS) from the MetaFrame server then you will be prompted that NFuse will not be installed.  This is recommend, click Yes to continue

3.       Click the I Agree button to continue

4.       Click Next

5.       Click Next

6.       You are now prompted to select if you are going to create a new farm or join an existing server farm.   For the purpose of the section of the document select Create a new server farm and click Next.

7.       You are now prompted to select the Data Store Configuration.   You are presented with the following choices:

Use a local database for the data store Select this option if you will be utilizing Microsoft Access as your data store.  Beware, you will not be able to utilize server cloning on the server hosting the Access database (host server).   If do not document the installation of the Access database, although you are not prompted with any difficult questions.

Use a third party database for the data store Select the option if you will be utilizing a third party database such as Microsoft SQL 7 and above or Oracle.  This is the section I will be documenting below.

For the purposes of this document click Use a third party database for the data store radio button and click Next.

8.       If you will be installing the MetaFrame server into a zone other than the default zone you will want to uncheck the Use Default Zone Name checkbox and enter the zone name you would like to create / join in the Zone Name text box and click Next

9.       Click Next

10.    You are now prompted to create the ODBC connection to the data store.   Enter a description in the Description text box and select which SQL server you will be connecting to from the Server drop down box.

11.    Select the With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entry by the user radio button and click Next.   Note:  You will need to enter user account with administrator access to the SQL server.

12.    Click the Client Configuration button in order to configure how the MetaFrame server will communicate with the data store.   Select the TCP/IP radio button and click OK.

13.    You are now prompted to configure MetaFrame with the username and password to the MetaFrame XP database that you created earlier in this document, click Next.   This is the password you created during step 7 of How to create a MetaFrame XP data store with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 earlier in this document.

14.    You are now prompted to enter the new Server Farm name.    This is a very important screen because you CANNOT change the farm name later.   Enter the Farm name documented in the Design phase in the Server Farm text box and click Next.

15.    Verify the you entered and spelled the farm name correctly and click Next.

16.    The next screen that you are presented with requires you to select the interoperability settings for your MetaFrame XP farm.   Migration philosophies are far beyond the scope of this document so for this document select the Operate independently in native ICA-only mode radio button and click Next.

For information on migration philosophies please refer to the following links

Migration to MetaFrame XP Web Seminar Presented by: Rick Dehlinger

17.    Click Next, accept the administrator as the default farm administrator.  Additional farm administrators can be added later.

18.    Confirm the account that you selected is correct and click Yes to continue.

19.    You are now prompted to select the protocols that will be available to support ICA connections.  From my experiences, Ive noticed that people confuse this with connecting to file and print resources.  Unless you will be connecting from a workstation that does not have the TCP/IP protocol installed you will only want to select TCP/IP and click Next.

20.    If you will be supporting Dial-in connections to your MetaFrame server then you will want to click the Add Modems button and add the appropriate modems.   When finished Click Next to continue.

21.    Click Next to continue

22.    You are now prompted to select how MetaFrame will deal with shadowing.   Unless your customer requires disabling Shadowing support I recommend to accept the defaults and click Next to continue

23.    Click Next to continue.

24.    You are now prompted to select if you will change the default server driver letter from C: and more importantly you will select how users will view their local drive.   I know that most peoples first intuition would be to reassign the server drive letters to eliminate the need for user training but I highly recommend you from that course of action.  From my experience, it is important to not plan for today but for tomorrow and you just dont know what application you might need to support in the future and some applications just dont work with reassigned drive letters. I have been burned twice in the past and have learned from my mistakes.

With this in mind, I recommend you verify the Remap the server drives checkbox is unchecked and then click Next.

25.    Enter the TCP/IP port that the Citrix XML Service will listen on and Click Next.   The default is port 80 and unless you have a reason for doing so I recommend that you stick with the default across all servers in the farm.

26.    Click Next to perform the installation.

27.    Click Next

28.    Click Cancel to the ICA Client Distribution Wizard.  We will upgrade the ICA clients during the upgrade to Feature Release 1.

29.    You are now prompted to enter the MetaFrame XP 1.0 Licensing numbers that you received from Citrix.   If you purchased a shrink wrap product, then you will find these licenses on the inside of the front cover of the MetaFrame XP CDROM pack.   You will need to enter both the Server license, click Add, then enter the ICA Connect license number and client Add.   When you have entered all available licenses click Next.

30.    You are now prompted to enter the MetaFrame XP Product Code.   Verify that the suggested product code matches the product code found on the license label and click Next.

31.    You have now successfully installed MetaFrame XP.   Click Restart to reboot the server and continue on to configuring MetaFrame XP.

You have now successfully created a new server farm and installed MetaFrame XP 1.0

6. 2.        How to Install Additional MetaFrame XP Servers to the Farm

5.       Following Steps 1 5 in Installing MetaFrame XP on the first server in the Farm section of this document.

6.       You are now prompted to create a new server farm or join an existing farm.   For the purposes of this section of the document select, Join an existing server farm and click Next.

7.       You are now prompted to select how the server will connect to the data store.   You are presented with the following two choices:

Direct data store connection This setting will allow the server to directly communicate with the third party database via a local ODBC connection.

Connect to a data store set up locally on another server This setting is designed for a connection to a farm configured with the Microsoft Access database.

8.       To continue, follow steps 8 through 28 as documented in Installing MetaFrame XP on the first server in the Farm section of this document.

9.       You are now prompted to enter MetaFrame XP 1.0 Licensing information.  You are NOT to enter any serial number for any additional servers that are added to the farm.  You will point these servers to the existing licenses already installed in the next step.

Click Next.

10.    Follow sets 30 31 as documented in Installing MetaFrame XP on the first server in the Farm section of this document.

Uncheck the Citrix Packager component and click Next.

4.       Click Finish.

You have now successfully installed Installation Manager Installer service and the management plug-in.

6. 5.        How to Install MetaFrame XP Feature Release 1

I highly recommend that if you are an active Subscription Advantage customer you take advantage of Feature Release 1.   In order to fulfill the subscription and obtain a Feature Release 1 license you will need to log on to www.mycitrix.com

If for any reason you decide against installed Feature Release 1 but want to take advantage of the bug fixes, you will need set the MetaFrame Feature Release Level to none.  The feature release level affects the product license that the server requires. The following are examples of the effect of the feature release setting:

If a servers feature release level is set to Feature Release 1, the server seeks a Feature Release 1 product license from the server farms license pool. If the license is available, the feature release software is enabled and its features are available on the server. If the Feature Release 1 license is not available, the server does not accept connections from ICA Clients.

If a servers feature release level is set to "Not Installed," the server does not seek a feature release product license and the features of the feature release are not available on the server.

1.      Insert the Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Windows Feature Release 1 CDROM and click the Feature Release 1 button.

2.      Click the I Agree button to continue

3.      Click Next to continue

4.      Click Next to continue

5.      Check Run the Client Disruption Wizard checkbox and follow the installation wizard as documented in How to Update the ICA Client Database with a ICA Client Images section later in this document.

6.      Click OK.

Note:  you are now required to install Feature Release licenses as documented below.

7.      Click OK to restart the system.

You have now successfully installed MetaFrame XP Feature Release 1 and you are now required to install and activate the Feature Release license.

8.      Open the Citrix Management Console and right click on the Licenses key and click Add Licenses

9.      Enter a valid Server license and click Add.   Repeat the steps and add a valid connection license.

You have now successfully installed and licensed Feature Release 1.   You are still required to activate the license but we will do that in a bit.
