In the following DABCC TV Virtualization Video Podcast, we are very happy to have Jason E. Smith, Director of Virtual User and Application Solutions at Liquidware Labs with us.. Jason gives us a demo of ProfileUnity with FlexApp which allows virtual desktop users to seamlessly install their own applications into a Windows desktop environment without affecting the underlying base Operating System or image. The solution currently supports non-persistent virtual desktop environments such as VMware View and Citrix XenDesktop. Support for persistent and physical environments is planned for Q4 2012.
The feature set was introduced earlier this year and the technology lays the groundwork for a very innovative roadmap of application management from Liquidware Labs. The company plans to showcase significant advancements at VMworld 2012 this month, including virtual software deployment of applications to a user, group, or the enterprise. The technology is a first in that it allows for "virtual software deployment" of applications without installing the applications themselves. In the following DABCC Live episode Smith makes the distinction that FlexApp is not application virtualization but rather it virtualizes where the software is installed. The result is that the apps look native to the OS, enabling compatibility of thousands of more apps than application virtualization approaches. Liquidware Labs asserts that the technology advancement in FlexApp results in streamlined management of virtual AND physical PCs, with fewer desktop images to manage while enabling more workers to be compatible with virtual desktops.
