I hope you’ve heard our announcement this week on our new partnership with ExaGrid. There’s certainly a buzz of excitement within Unitrends, and as I visited ExaGrid’s headquarters yesterday, I sensed the same.

So I’ve had my mind on storage quite a bit lately, and I’ve been in dialogs with users and on forums discussing best practices for protecting Hyper-V environments. So let me take a shot at outlining some key things to consider as you may be kicking the tires on our TRIAL or FREE edition UEB or are generally architecting storage for your virtual environment.

Backups of your VM’s (and your host) should be kept on separate storage from where the .vhd files reside.

You should have some level of fault tolerance (RAID) in your primary and backup storage. I prefer RAID 10 or RAID 6, as they provide the most tolerance, but if cost is too prohibitive, RAID 5 is better than nothing.
