Federal MEGABYTE Act Signed Into Law!
On July 29, President Obama signed into law the MEGABYTE Act of 2016, otherwise known as the “Making Electronic Government Accountable By Yielding Tangible Efficiencies Act.” Megabyte requires the Federal CIO to, among other things:
- Develop a comprehensive software licensing policy for managing enterprise software license agreements and commercial software licenses
- Establish a comprehensive inventory of enterprise licenses by identifying and collecting information about software license agreements using automated discovery and inventory tools
- Regularly track and maintain software licenses, establish goals and objectives for the government’s software license management program and consider the software license management life cycle phases to implement effective decision-making
Megabyte represents another significant piece of legislation in a succession of enacted Federal legislation and regulations that supports, encourages and mandates pro-Software Asset Management / Software License Optimization policy and best practices. Other legislation includes:
