The Holidays are here and that means we all get a little time to relax and play a bit.  I recently recorded a podcast with Jason Conger from Splunk (soon to be posted).  Although I’ve been told a lot about Splunk I never took the time to check it out or learn about it in more detail.  I must admit I’m very impressed so I wanted to share it with you and maybe over the holiday slow time you can take some minutes to download it and play around.  You can actually run it on your laptop (Windows, Mac, Linux, HP UX)!!!  It’s just a downright cool product!

What is Splunk?

Basically Spunk takes all your machine data (things like logs, Citrix session info, you name it) indexes it and then allows you to search upon it and present it in any way you desire!  What I mean by that is you can write apps to interface with Splunk and present the data you receive anyway you desire.  Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a developer as Splunk has a site (Splunkbase.com) where you can download tons of amazing apps.  Really cool!

The official explanation is as follows:

“Splunk Enterprise collects, indexes and harnesses all of the fast-moving machine data generated by your applications, servers and devices—physical, virtual and in the cloud. Troubleshoot application problems and investigate security incidents in minutes instead of hours or days, avoid service degradation or outages, deliver compliance at lower cost and gain new business insights.”

It is also free for up to 500 MBs of indexes per day.  That is a LOT of data guys!  So download it and have some fun!
