Do You Have a Backup Solution or a Backup Mixture?

Backup vendors talk about their “backup solutions” or “data protection solutions”.
But are they really solutions? Can the parts be untangled? Should they be?
Ten years ago, you’d buy a mixture. You’d buy some tape libraries, data movement and cataloging software, some big friendly servers, maybe some disk arrays, perhaps a database package, a reporting package, operating system licenses… speaking of licenses, you’d spend at least as much time fiddling with those as you would with the actual management of your data protection policies and hosts. You’d probably also hire a truck service to store your tapes off-site.
