Dell‘s buyout talks with Quest Software have ended, and Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) is not poised to buy Quest Software (NASDAQ: QSFT), according to Reuters. Quest Software, which develops IT management and virtualization software, has been in play since at least March 2012. So what’s next for the two companies? Here are some clues from The VAR Guy.

Lower-level representatives from Dell and Quest Software are still in touch, Reuters reported. But it sounds like — at least for the moment — the two companies are heading in separate directions. Multiple suitors apparently have bid for Quest Software in recent weeks.

Insight Venture Partners agreed to acquire Quest Software in March for $2 billion but the deal included a “go shop” period that allowed Quest Software to seek higher offers for the company. Pundits speculated that Dell and several other potential suitors — perhaps even CA Technologies and Microsoft — made bids for Quest Software. But as of this evening it sounds like Insight Venture Partners is still on track to buy the company.
