Much is written about cloud computing these days. You can’t open an issue ofInformation Week or CIOwithout seeing dozens of articles about cloud-this and cloud-that. But when was the last time you read something useful that clearly explained, “what is cloud?” The word “cloud” has matured over the last few years, and even conservative areas of the data center, such as data protection, are shifting towards cloud applications.
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology1, there are a few key attributes to cloud computing:
- on-demand self-service — Customers can dynamically and automatically provision resources without human interaction from the service provider (who provides the “cloud”).
- broad network access — Capabilities are accessed over a network connection using standard techniques that enable a variety of clients, rather than a single narrow application or device.
