Key #1 – A Complete Desktop and Network Assessment – Know Your Client Better Than They Do!

Successful virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployment requires a lot of design and planning. The reason for this is the fact that every organization is unique. This is due to the fact that most organizations were built over time with different personnel that had differing palettes of technology. Now we are looking a whole scope of different applications, hardware, operating systems, and other technology variables built over a time. In order to get a handle on a business case for VDI, it is essential to build a comprehensive assessment that will give insight into the organization’s environment, business issues, and current technology needs.

Before performing an assessment, it is essential to ensure that the organization sees value in this. The best way is to charge a flat rate for the assessment that goes over a very specific scope of assessment. Do not be afraid to charge for an assessment. As an expert consultant, organizations expect you to charge for your time, and charging is a mechanism that helps to weed out customers that are just looking for the freebie.

The next steps are to make sure you have the right set of questions to ask and tools to use to gather data. I highly recommend that you create your own assessment questionnaire that goes over two sets of questions, business and technical. The business drivers will help you to understand who is going to make decisions, such as, is there a budget, what are the business problems that are going to be solved, and so on. The next area is the technical questions. These questions need to be geared toward gathering all the information to verify against the information that you will gather with the tool sets out there that are specifically for desktops.

There are two companies recommend for tools sets for gathering data for desktop assessments, Liquidware Labs and Lakeside Software. The ability of these software sets are to be able to gather accurate data and then make assessments on which desktops should and should not be virtualized. This is very helpful as it cuts down time on information gathering and gives your metrics specifically for desktop virtualization.

The last step is the key to the success of your assessments and that is to be able to present it in three different areas: Business Drivers, Actual Assessment, and Proposed Solutions. The goal is to pain a picture as vividly as you can on what the pain is, why they are feeling the pain, and what they need to do to alleviate the pain. The assessment helps you to understand your customer better, and builds a stronger relationship. I have seen many times in the assessment process, finding out that the customer does not even know they had unlicensed software, or additional machines they did not have on inventory, etc. This really helps them to know that your goal is in the end to know their network as well as if not better than themselves. This allows you to expertly recommend solutions like VDI that will solve their various business issues.
