Today's Enterprise Application Delivery Framework
Today’s Enterprise Application Delivery Framework Introduction. What is an ‘Enterprise Application Delivery Framework’? It is a strategic framework which provides various application delivery mechanisms for your corporate application portfolio which could be anywhere from 50 apps to 5000 apps. Building an application delivery framework is understanding that applications will not all fit into one delivery strategy, it is always going to be a hybrid of technologies that enable application delivery to the enterprise. This is becoming more prominent now that enterprises are switching from XP to Windows 7 without any clear strategy on what to do with applications that are not compatible. An Enterprise Application Delivery Framework provides...........

I got 99 problems but IOPS ain't one - Option 2 - NFS
Original article http://www.dabcc.com/article.aspx?id=17152 described using Fusion IO as the PVS 'write cache' which introduced some HA issues. This diagram illustrates Fusion IO as an NFS share.

Goodbye Citrix XenServer - Hello VMware ESX
We have a Citrix eco system, all our Citrix components are hosted on XenServer and I must say it is a good product and I believe Simon Crosby when he delivered his message at Synergy this year around it not all about the 'feature' list. In terms of cost, it doesnt even compare to ESX and so far VM stability has been great.

iPad and iPhone plus Citrix AGEE and GSLB equals PAIN
If you have the latest version of the Citrix Access Gateway Enterprise with 'Global Server Load Balancing' enabled and you are delivering resources to iPads and iPhones then you are in for a rough ride, here is why.

Second Attempt to Stream Adobe Photoshop CS4 with XenApp - it Works!
Yesterday I posted the article Attempting to Stream Adobe Photoshop CS4 with XenApp. As the name suggests I attempted to stream Adobe Photoshop using version 6 of the Citrix streaming profiler which is still in beta. I received a few comments, a couple stating that it doesnt work and won't work and then this morning a really helpful anonymous chap added a comment which instructed me to add a 'ignore rule' to the profile I created and a reg tweek to allow the streamed flex net service more time to start up. So this is what I did.

Attempting to Stream Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Citrix XenApp
A long time coming...... has been the ability to stream photoshop using Citrix XenApp to both workstations and XenApp servers. I have spent time on this in this past, trying to separate out the flexnet license service install, script the deployment manually in preparation for the streaming of photoshop, almost got it to work but then got distracted by season five of 24. Since then Citrix have released a beta version of XenApp 6 which includes version 6 of the streaming profiler. Version 6 includes the ability to stream services :D, sweet (Office 2010 installs 3 services also, so its pretty important that this is now supported).

Streaming Citrix Apps on Mass Part 1 - Planning
Thought I would publish a few basic guidelines that we use when preparing for a Citrix streaming project which contains a large amount of applications. It is very tricky to get it right, actually streaming the apps can be the easy bit, managing what needs to be streamed, in what order and when and also where the media and documentation is located can be very difficult to manage especially when you are working to strict timescales. especially when the organisation you are working with doesn't really understand which applications are used and which aren't (I mean that with respect).

Citrix User Profile Manager Versus Appsense Personalisation Server
Hello again DABCC readers. It has been a while since my last article so here goes... The team over at Point to Point have allowed me to publish some content that I wrote for them recently. It is all about Citrix User Profile Manager versus Appsense Personalisation Server. I hope that you find it useful. Windows profile management is gaining momentum due to a refresh in the Windows operating systems (Windows 7, Vista and Server 2008), the ‘Cloud’ computing model and the increase in VDI projects based on technology such as XenDesktop, VMware View, and Microsoft Med-V. This article will provide a high level analysis of the differences between these two products and how they may assist in the implementation of the above technologies. If there are any errors within this article then please feel free to comment and I will correct them.

Slumdog Virtualization : How to Start Building Virtual Infrastructure Without a Bean, Part 1
It has been a while since I have posted anything, been busy as hell trying to finish a French renovation project. This recession is proving to be a right pain in the rear isn't it? Budgets being slashed left right and center, projects on hold whilst the uncertainty continues, what a nightmare... So what can you do with no budget? Answer? Virtualize without spending a penny, and here is how to get started.

My Citrix XenApp Sucks : Part 2
As I said in my previous article, and I believe it more that any other aspect of Citrix XenApp project delivery. If user experience / perception of running applications from Citrix XenApp hosted servers is poor, then convincing users and executive management that application hosting via Citrix XenApp is the future for your business is going to very difficult, probably impossible. If it performs well and users understand the benefits and are taking advantage of them (working from anywhere, everything in one place and easy to access) then it makes the whole project much easier to sell and deliver.

My Citrix XenApp Sucks: Part 1
It happens a lot, people like me get invited to various meetings which are focused around issues that a business is facing with it's XenApp deployment, this could be any type of business from local councils to retail, hospitals, police etc, where ever it is, the technology is usually the same it is just the method of access and the application suite that is different. There is a pattern here though, meetings usually start with "This Citrix environment is giving me and my users nothing but problems, they complain about performance, stability, poor login times, security restrictions etc, you know what? I think Citrix XenApp sucks" Really....?

Citrix Access Gateway Advanced, High Availability Design
Hi all, the team at DABCC have moved me over to the 'In the Trenches' section, which is great, so I will be writing here for the foreseeable future. I have a number of articles which I am working on and will be publishing over the next few months exclusively on DABCC, hopefully they will be useful! My VMware ESX + Openfiler article has proved to be my most popular edition to DABCC, user comments will be moved over soon.

Terminal Services 2008 v Citrix XenApp, reasons why an initial investment in a Citrix XenApp platform will set the stage for a dynamic and robust application delivery infrastructure
I know this has been done to death over the past few years, but since Citrix have released Citrix XenApp 5.0 on Terminal Services 2008, I thought it may be worth while posting an article on the key infrastructure benefits that Citrix XenApp has to offer. If you are new to the application delivery market place and want to learn a little more about how these 2 products differ then this article may assist you in your future decision making.

How to set up a free iSCSI or NAS storage system for VMware ESX using Openfiler
Everything I am about to demonstrate to you here is free. You won't have to spend a penny on software to build this architecture, the end result here is a centralised storage system that can be used for iSCSI or NAS storage hosting to all your ESX clients to enable the use of VMotion, HA and DRS services.
