Documenting a Citrix XenApp 5 Farm with Microsoft PowerShell and Word – Version 2
The script to document a Citrix XenApp 5 farm has proven to be very popular. I have always wanted to take the time to create a version of the script that would output to a Microsoft Word document. Ryan Revord had taken the XenApp 6.0 version of the script and changed it to create a basic Microsoft Word document. Ryan saved me a lot of work but I wanted improve on the document created by adding a cover page, Table of Contents and footer. This article will explain the changes to the script to...

Documenting a Citrix XenApp 6.5 Farm with Microsoft PowerShell and Word – Version 3.1
The script to Document a Citrix XenApp 6.5 Farm with Microsoft PowerShell was originally written in October of 2011. The script was updated to Version 2 on January 21, 2013 and then updated to Version 3 on January 28, 2013. Since Version 3 was released, several issues have been reported and fixed. This article documents the fixes in Version 3.1.

Java Runtime Installation Failure (Error 1330) Updated June 30, 2011 for JRE Update 26
When trying to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24 at a client site recently, I kept getting the error: Product: Java(TM) 6 Update 24 -- Error 1330.A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file M:\Documents and Settings\_cwebster\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_24\Data1.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt. Error 24581 was returned by WinVerifyTrust.

Adding an SSD Storage Device to Citrix XenServer
In the process of creating Virtual Machines (VMs) for labs for a customer, I needed to have 10VMs running at the same time. My XenServer host uses a 1.5TB local SATA drive for VM storage and an iSCSI storage server. I can’t use the storage server for these VMs as I will be taking my lab XenServer to the customer site and I don’t want to take two very heavy full tower servers. After getting the eighth VM running, my XenServer host was begging for mercy. The local SATA bus was being saturated with disk traffic. Since I need to have 10 VMs running I needed a solution fast. I ordered a Solid State Device (SSD) storage drive to put in the XenServer host. Since I am not a Linux geek, I decided to document what I had to do to make the SSD drive available for exclusive use by XenServer 5.6 SP2.

Fixing a Broken Delivery Services Console on Citrix XenApp 5 for Windows Server 2003
The most frequently asked question from people who read my Learning the Basics of … series for XenApp 5 on Server 2003 is “why is the Delivery Services Console broken?” I get this question so often; I updated Part 4 and Part 5 of the series but have also decided to put out a separate article on this issue.

A Quick Look at PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer
I recently had an almost disastrous experience with my lab XenServer host. After that episode, I decided I needed to find a way too reliably and easily backup and restore virtual machines (VMs). On a couple of mailing lists I subscribe to, I have seen people mention PHD Virtual for doing backups of their VMs on VMware ESX and Citrix XenServer. At Synergy 2011 in San Francisco, I came across the PHD Virtual booth on the exhibit floor. I like the information I was given so I asked the people at the booth if I could get a copy to test for my lab to see what the product was like. This article will provide a quick look at PHD Virtual Backup for XenServer. It is not intended as a product review. This article is based on XenServer 5.6 SP2, PHD Virtual Backup 5.2 for Citrix XenServer and an external 2TB USB drive. Keep in mind that for a production environment, you would likely use a SAN. As you will see later in this article, backing up to a USB drive was lengthy and appropriate only for a lab environment.

Finding Offline Citrix XenApp Servers Using Microsoft PowerShell Part 4 of 4
In Part 3 of this 4 Part series, the PowerShell script from Parts 1 and 2 was modified to list all the offline Citrix XenApp servers in a XenApp farm by Zone and validate the Zone name entered. The original question was could PowerShell be used to get a list of offline servers. The answer is yes. But, there is another way.

Finding Offline Citrix XenApp Servers Using Microsoft PowerShell Part 3 of 4
In Part 2 of this 4 Part series, the PowerShell script from Part 1 was modified to list all the offline Citrix XenApp servers in a XenApp farm by Zone. While the script works and gives the desired output, there is a bug in that an invalid Zone can be entered which causes the script to abruptly terminate. In this article, the script will be modified to validate the Zone name entered.

Finding Offline Citrix XenApp Servers Using Microsoft PowerShell Part 2 of 4 (Updated May 21, 2011)
In Part 1 of this 4 Part series, a PowerShell script was created to list all the offline Citrix XenApp servers in a XenApp farm. While the script works and gives the desired output, there is no way to restrict the output to just a single Zone in a farm. In this article, the script will be converted into a function that allows the output to be restricted to a single Zone.

Finding Offline Citrix XenApp Servers Using Microsoft PowerShell Part 1 of 4 (Updated May 21, 2011)
Recently I was asked how to use PowerShell to get a list of offline Citrix XenApp servers. Being new to PowerShell, this gave me an opportunity to use some of my new knowledge. At the time this article is being written, I have been working with PowerShell for less than one month. Feel free to offer suggestions for how to improve the script in this four part article series.

Missing Citrix MetaFrame COM Server
I am picky when it comes to the Citrix XenApp servers on which I work. Warnings and Errors in the event logs just drive me up the wall. They are both to be banished if at all possible. A client site I was at recently fixing issues had hundreds of DCOM errors recorded in every XenApp server’s System event log.

Weird Errors and the Mysterious Root Cause
Over the past few months I have come across several seemingly unrelated issues that all had one root cause. There was not any typical correlation between the servers. Citrix software was everything from Presentation Server 4.0 to XenApp 5. Windows operating systems ranged from Windows 2000 Server up to Windows Server 2008. Users would receive one of the following errors:

How Do I Tell if Shadowing is Allowed or Prohibited on a Citrix Server (Updated December 23, 2010)
Citrix XenApp Server products allow Farm Administrators and Users to interact with other user sessions. Shadowing can be a useful tool for user collaboration, training, troubleshooting and monitoring. This capability is useful for supervisors, help desk personnel, teachers, and anyone else who may need to examine another user's session. During Setup, you can limit or disable shadowing. You can disable shadowing of ICA sessions on all servers in a farm if, for example, legal requirements prohibit shadowing of user's sessions. Or, you may want to disable shadowing on servers that host sensitive applications such as Human Resources or Payroll.

Error Deleting User From Citrix License Server 11.6.1 build 10007
A colleague recently had an issue with the Citrix License Server version 11.6.1 build 1007 where a license user account could not be deleted. Restarting the Citrix license services and restarting the server still did not allow the user account to be deleted. In this article you will learn how to successfully delete the license user account.

Is Your iPad or iPhone Slow to Access Your Citrix XenApp Services Site
I really like using my Apple iPad for accessing published applications on my Citrix XenApp servers hosted on Citrix XenServer 5.6. I had four problems I thought were related to the Citrix Receiver for iPad. From comments made by customers and from questions posed on Experts Exchange, I am not the only one experiencing these issues.
