Enough Is Enough - Twitter, Facebook, Google Wave is a Waste of Time - E-Mail Works - Top Twitter and Facebook Users Are Lazy - Suck It
I’m back with another rant and this time it is not about Citrix or VMware and/or even Microsoft. In fact, those companies have nothing at all to do with this rant but I need to get this off my chest as it is long overdue. It is all about “too many clients” and the people that use them. Don’t worry; I will make it short…

Citrix Cuts Certification Benefits - Passes Costs to Test Takers
I received an email from Citrix Education today detailing they will be no longer sending paper certificates to new Citrix Certified Administrator (CCA) and/or Citrix Certified Sales Professional (CCSP). In exchange for the paper certificate the awardee will be given a “PDF”. They even detailed “benefits” to this change:

VMware Takes Us Back In Time, to the Windows 95 Launch
Did anyone else feel like the VMware vSphere, which by the way I hate that name, launch reminded them of the Windows 95 launch? I was almost waiting for Jay Leno and the Rolling Stones to come out and "Start me Up!". Maybe it is because I'm growing more and more cynical of hype and the roar of the web cult that consists mostly of employees and people whose entire livelihood is built around one company or another. Now that the waiting is over and the announcement was made, again. I can't help but ask, did it just not seem to you like "so Windows 95 like"? Maybe there is a reason for that.

Citrix Releases Citrix Receiver for the iPhone Tech Preview: Windows Apps on an iPhone is HERE!
Today Citrix released the Technical Preview of the upcoming ICA client for the iPhone called, Citrix Receiver for the iPhone, to the Apple iPhone App Store. Yup, it is live and now we can run Windows applications on our iPhone, of course you need a Citrix XenApp environment to back in but who does not have one of those? :)

Citrix CTO Simon Crosby Issues "Open Challenge" to VMware CTO Stephen Herrod to Stop the Bad Science
One thing I admire is a person willing to express their opinion and stand behind their product. The 1st place price for this type of behavior must go to Citrix's CTO Simon Crosby who gives no quarter to those who try to position him and/or his products in any way other than how Simon sees it. That being said, this time Simon has responded to a VMware post claiming ESX Server performs better than Citrix's XenServer running Citrix XenApp workloads.

Should Antitrust Issues Force Microsoft to Support VMware's Virtual Machine Format in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2?
With the upcoming release of Windows Server 2008 R2 and the amazing Windows 7, Microsoft has added native support in both operating systems for their virtual hard drive (VHD) file format. Could this be seen as an antitrust issue? As Microsoft is locked in a battle with VMware for virtualization market share, could embedding their own virtual drive format be seen as using their overwhelming share of the desktop and server OS market to their advantage? Is this the same thing as trying to embed "search" in the Internet Explorer browser which caused Google to go and whine and complain to the Justice Department?

First Look at the Updated Remote Desktop Services Web Access Portal in Windows Server 2008 R2
With the first public beta release of Windows Server 2008 R2 comes a new version of Remote Desktop Servers (RDS), formerly known as Terminal Services. RDS ships with a slew of new features and some that have been updated. In this short article, I wanted to give you a quick peek at the new look and feel of the Remote Desktop Services Web Access portal known to users as the Remote Employee Portal (formally known as TS Web Access).

Refresher: Microsoft's New Names for Terminal Services - Now Called Remote Desktop Services Presentation Virtualization
As many of you know the folks at Microsoft will be moving away from the name "Terminal Services" and replacing it with "Remote Desktop Services' or "RDS" in future releases of their Presentation Virtualization solution. In fact, now that the first public beta of Windows Server 2008 R2 has hit the download sites I thought it might be handy to put together a refresher on what names have been changed and to what.

Virtualization Doug Joins Twitter!
What can I say? I finally did it and I joined the Twitter craze! The goal for my existence on Twitter is to share with you the different technologies that I find cool, not just relating to Citrix, Microsoft, VMware, and other virtualization solutions, but I will discuss all the technologies that I find cool, the ideas I find awesome, and I will post notes about new product launches and updates. I might just also rant a bit about the many things I find silly or just downright piss me off. You know, all the FUD that is thrown around on a day-to-day basis.

Cloud Computing: What VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix are NOT TELLING YOU!
At last week's VMworld virtualization conference all anyone wanted to talk about was "Cloud Computing". The Cloud this and the Cloud that... Oh my, if I had a casino chip for every time someone said the word "Cloud" I would have left Vegas a very rich man but to me every time I heard the word Cloud, I cringed...why?

Is the Microsoft / Citrix Deal Still on the Table? (Microsoft Buys Citrix Rumor Continues)
Two weeks ago I wrote a follow-up article about my comments in a June 5th article where I stated I thought Microsoft would announce their intention to buy Citrix before and/or during VMware's VMworld virtualization conference. Of course we all know I was mistaken on the timeline, but am I really mistaken on the idea that Microsoft might just buy Citrix? To me and a few others, it seems that the deal might still just happen.

Microsoft is on the Attack – Slams VMware for Being Too Expensive!
In honor on VMware’s once a year virtualization bash Microsoft brought up a new web site where they basically slam VMware for being, what they call, too expensive, http://www.vmwarecostswaytoomuch.com/.

Microsoft to Buy Citrix - Announcement Coming Friday or Monday???
A few months ago I wrote an article detailing how Citrix CEO's decision to buy XenSource was one of the greatest moves in IT history. In that article I also threw out a teaser stating that I thought Microsoft would announce they would buy Citrix a day or two before VMware's VMworld conference. Well, it is a few days before VMworld and I must admit I was starting to think I would have to write that there would be no deal and to eat a bit of crow, but today my inbox lit up with rumors. I even heard the rumor on my favorite podcast, Tech 5 with John C. Dvorak.

How VMware Can Stop the Microsoft and Citrix Push for Virtualization Dominance
My last week’s article detailed why I feel VMware is falling prey to Microsoft's age-old way to market dominance so this week I took the opposite approach and have tried to explain the four key areas VMware must address in order to win the war and/or at least not become the next Netscape / Novell.

VMware’s Woes - Is Microsoft Virtualization to Blame?
Today, VMware announced it has fired (my words, not theirs) one of their founders and the current CEO, Diane Greene. This came as a huge shock to me and most of us in the virtualization industry. In the following article I will explain why I think VMware’s Board let Diane go an why VMware's stock falling like a MythBusters project to determine the terminal velocity of a 21 billion dollar rock falling from the top of the Empire State Building, and why do I think this is mostly caused by Microsoft.
