My random thoughts regarding server based computing, technology, and whatever else crosses my mind.
Changes in Windows 2008 Group Policy vs Windows 2003 Group Policy
Windows 2008 has been out for a bit now and one of the things I don't think people realize is that there are differences bewteen Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 Group Policy.

What would happen if Microsoft bought Citrix?
So a few days ago Doug Brown posted an editorial saying how he thought Microsoft would buy Citrix in the next few days. Brian Madden then responded on how he thought this wasn't going to happen. Well, we all know what has happened so far and that has been nothing. Truthfully, it was a long shot to begin with especially since there was no threat of Citrix being bought by any big competitor to Microsoft. After reading and thinking about this though, it's interesting to think about what would happen if Microsoft did buy Citrix.

Blast from the Past: How to Create a Single, Customized Start Menu for All Users
When publishing a desktop, many times administrators have to also control what users see in the start menu. This article will discuss how to create a single start menu that will automatically customize itself for each user. This solution uses Access Based Enumeration, folder redirection group policy and NTFS permissions.

Problem with Microsoft Windows 2008 EasyPrint and PDF's
I've been working with a gentleman on the newsgroups recently and he was having issues with EasyPrint and PDF printing. It seems that EasyPrint will name the PDF "System.Windows.Documents.pdf" no matter what you put the name in as. This bug has been confirmed by Microsoft and there are currently no plans to fix this within Windows 2008.

Blast from the Past: Understanding Terminal Server's Permissions Compatibility Options
When installing a terminal server, the very first configuration option is an important security decision. The person installing terminal server is given a choice about "permissions compatibility." For Windows 2000, this decision is presented as "Permissions compatible with Windows 2000 Users" or "Permissions compatible with Terminal Server 4.0 Users." Windows 2003 presents the choice as "Full Security" or "Relaxed Security." This decision lays the foundation of the rest of your NTFS security strategy. It even has the potential to override your own NTFS settings, so understanding it is very important.

How to prevent users from accessing a desktop on Microsoft Terminal Services when using RemoteApps
Thanks to migah on the Windows 2008 Terminal Services Technet Forums, there seems to be a very simple solution to allow RemoteApps but to prevent users from accessing the desktops directly. Here it is in his own words:

Could Desktop Virtualization be a boon to Linux?
For years, Linux advocates have been predicting the year of the Linux desktop. Well, I'm definitely not here to say that. I am here to say though that over the next couple of years, as Desktop Virtualization becomes more and more popular, more and more Linux desktops will be rolled out than ever before. On thing I've come to learn over the last few months is how many people want a full featured linux client for desktop virtualization. Why is this you ask?

How to turn Microsoft Windows XP into a thin client
One of the things that comes around is how do I lock down the desktop while allowing a session to start and run. The requirements are pretty simple. No interaction with the desktop except for logging off or shutting down and the session must start automatically. We’ll be looking at this from a Microsoft Windows XP and Vista perspective.

Blast from the Past: Understanding Group Policy in a Terminal Services Environment
As Terminal Services becomes more widely deployed, many people are asking how to secure their environments. The answer to this question can be as simple or as complex as people want. A commonality among many people who ask this question is their unfamiliarity with Group Policy. Group Policy is a powerful tool in helping secure terminal services deployments. This paper shall cover the basics of implementing a Group Policy Object (GPO) in a terminal services environment.

I choose not to buy the Apple iPhone 3g. Here’s why
There are two things I carry with me almost everywhere: My cell phone and my iPod Touch. My previous phone was a Palm Treo 700w. Outside of it being short on memory, the phone has been very good to me. I had apps to store passwords, track business expenses, tether it as a modem, and all sorts of things. It's a Windows Mobile phone (5.0) and it worked. The Touch is my favorite toy. It has my music and photo's. I always carry around at least 3 movies and a tv show. The screen on the touch is to die for and is well worth the price of admission. How that screen ended up on a device that, IMHO, is pretty well priced is beyond me. Ok, maybe it's a bit overpriced but it's so worth it.

Blast from the Past: Understanding NTFS Permissions in a Terminal Services Environment
This is an oldie but goodie and still very, very relevant. This article was one I had written a couple of years ago on NTFS permissions in Windows and how to use them properly. Even though NTFS permissions have been around for over ten years, in Terminal Server and Citrix environments it's vital that you truly understand how they work and how they should be applied. Many people wonder whether the default NTFS permissions are adequate or whether they should apply more customized permissions. While the answer is always "it depends," this article will provide some background information you'll need to understand to be able to make design decisions about NTFS permissions in your environment.
