Atlantis Computing Customer Blueprint: Kelway 1,000 User Citrix XenApp Architecture
Atlantis ILIO, Citrix XenApp 6.5 and VMware vSphere 5.1
The purpose of this document is to provide the implementation details of a 1,000 user Citrix XenApp deployment by Kelway, an international service provider, with Atlantis ILIO for XenApp™, Citrix XenApp 6.5 and VMware vSphere 5.1. Kelway has a no PC/laptop policy for their internal employees. They deploy applications and published desktops for these employees using 40 virtualized Citrix XenApp 6.5 servers on 8 HP ProLiant BL460c blade servers with Atlantis ILIO.
When Kelway acquired a company and increased the number of XenApp users by 20%, they found that help desk calls were increasing each month and that employees were getting unpredictable performance. Kelway examined their environment and found that they had a storage bottleneck with each XenApp session during business hours averaging 14 IOPS and peaking at 32 IOPS.
The EMC storage used for Kelway’s XenApp implementation was also shared with other server workloads including Microsoft SQL and Exchange. The result was that the storage processor utilization was high and causing performance issues for all workloads. To solve their storage bottleneck, Kelway faced a choice of upgrade their SAN storage or using some other form of storage for XenApp. Upgrading their SAN would require Kelway to spend over $50,000, almost doubling the cost per XenApp session. Ultimately, Kelway chose to use Atlantis ILIO for XenApp and leveraged local server memory as primary storage for their XenApp instances, which freed up their SAN for server workloads.
Using Atlantis ILIO for Citrix XenApp, Kelway was able to:
