Full disclosure: I like Microsoft. I, much to the chagrin of many of my data center peers, like them a lot. I think some of their larger-scale data center management moves have been excellent ones, and I happily run two flavors of their OS across multiple physical and virtual machines. But that's not to say I can't call their bluff (or foul, your call) when they do something ridiculously silly. And when I say I like them, well I like them as much as anyone can like their misbehaving, throwing smoke bombs down the school toilet child who they have to deal with on a daily basis. The kid's got potential, but he just can't stay focused.
Case in point, Microsoft's current "VMware is too expensive!" campaign. Remember these ad campaigns from VMworld? Now frequent readers will know I've been critical of the total cost of virtual platforms, especially those from VMware, since day one. Yeah, they're freakin' expensive, and not always worth the dough. But the truth is that VMware has a product to actually sell, and if a customer has a true need for features like DRS, vMotion, and HA, well then VMware has that product to offer.
