The folks at "The Hypervisor" just released some pretty interesting Microsoft Hyper-V vs. VMware Workstation benchmark tests showing Hyper-V to be much slower than VMware Workstation in numerous categories. This is really amazing as Hyper-V is Microsoft's "enterprise" virtualization solution and VMware Workstation is just a "lowly" desktop virtualization that is not suppose to be faster than a "bare metal hypervisor". Go Figure...

"In head to head benchmark tests of Microsoft Hyper-V compared to VMware Workstation, The Hypervisor test results indicate virtual machine (VM) performance using Hyper-V is below that of VMware Workstation.

We tested Hyper-V running on a desktop PC fitted with an Intel Core Quad Q6600 CPU running at 2.4GHz. We compared the results with the same PC running Microsoft Vista SP1 x86 and VMware Workstation 6. Our results show VMware Workstation 6 is a faster platform for both Windows and Linux applications, although Hyper-V is almost as fast as VMware Workstation for running Windows Vista."

It is possible to load integration services drivers during install
I loaded integration services for hyper-v during the install of Vista and Server 2008 VMs and it was much faster than without the integration services drivers. Just select the option to load drivers and mount the integration services iso. I suspect this will work for XP and Server 2003 as well.

Poor, poor testing methodology.

I built a test platform here on Hyper-V (I also have an ESX 3i Host, but the hardware isn't similar enough to give a sensible comparison), and during installation (I have nine copies of Server 2003 R2, a mix of x86 and x64 editions, on a Q6600 Core 2 Quad with 8Gb of RAM) it ran like a pup...

in fact, it was slow and unresponsive rigt up until the Hyper-V integration components were installed, at which point the entire machine became much, much more responsive - CPU dropped to more sensible levels, IO became more scaled....

to do *any* comparison on a virtualised system before the VMWare Tools or Hyper-V components are installed is just plain nuts.

FUD

Sounds like FUD to me... I wonder why they didn't release the proper specs of the machines, nor if the machines are kept the same (hardware and host OS configuration-wise) throughout their tests.

But then again, it's far from a proper test...

Datacore
Why would anyone pay $200.00 for iSCSI software from Datacore and an addional $100.00 for M$ OS as the host when you can get and iSCSI solution for free with OpenFiler? I don't understand their target market?

you have a lot to learn. Datacore runs circles around OpenFiler not to mention have you heard about support? I'm not going to put ALL my files in the hands of some open soruce solution. Yah right, that is a Good idea. LOL

VMware tried and tested
I have ran Citrix XP for NT 4.0 over VMWare workstation 5 with Windows 2000 for 8 years now and reboot it about once a year. VMware is rock solid. I have moved the Citrix Server on 3 different host computers . From my experience it runs very close to bear metal.

Pointless

I hate to defend Microsoft, but this test is pointless.
Do a real comparison of Hyper-V vs ESX on enterprise hardware.
I suspect ESX will come out on top but comparing Hyper-V to Workstation is a waist of time.

Installation is a poor way to test
Hyper-V does tend to be slower during install processes, the best way to test is a running VM, not during install. This is because during install it can't take advantage of the perf improvements that the integration components provide.

Installation isn't a poor way to test.
It's totally stupid way to test.
It would have been more honest (but just as stupid) to say Hyper-V isn't as good as VMWare Workstation because it's not made by VMWare. If nothing else it would have saved them the time of doing a 'benchmark'.

Hmm

They don't go into details as to how the disks were configured on each side. Dynamic or static. They also don't say if the tools were installed for both.

I would like to duplicate this in my own lab with my own gear to know for sure with some real test tools. Not installations. Especially since the install wouldn't use any of the paravirtualizing drivers.
