Citrix announced it has acquired the sepagoPROFILE user profile management solution from sepago GmbH and will release a Citrix version later in the year as the “Citrix User Profile Manager “. Citrix have also released a technical preview for all to download here.

The deal consists of Citrix buying the source code from sepago, a Citrix consulting company located in Germany, although Citrix did NOT acquire sepago and/or the sepagoPROFILE development team. Citrix has however engaged sepago in a long term co-development “statement of work” where the Citrix developers will work with the sepagoPROFILE team to continue to maintain and enhance the solution.

It is still unknown if Citrix will embed the new Citrix User Profile Manager into Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, and/or Citrix Provision Server or if they will continue to sell the solution as a standalone product. I will post more information as it is available and I will also be recording a podcast with the new Citrix User Profile Management Product Manager and the sepago team today, which I will post later this week so stay tuned.

Like Gareth, I too want to clear any confusion about these posts -- This is Kevin Goodman from RTO Software. This is the only post from RTO Software. Virtual Profiles is shipping and available for download. So there. And since Synergy (nee iForum) had the lowest turnout ever this year it is quite probable that many of you were home instead of the show. If so, you missed the opportunity to go by Appsense's booth and see how relevant their products are today and how they will be still relevant in the future. You also missed RTO's booth where we showed how Virtual Profiles is synergistic with Appsense's Environment Manager and how VP crushes Citrix User management like a grape. Hey, In the same spirit as Gareth and Kevin have posted, and while Script Start is also mentioned in this thread, this is Jason E. Smith from Entrigue and this is the only official post you'll see from Entrigue. I agree that the Citrix user profile solution leaves room for other technologies to solve the entire user profile dilemma in a more complete way. There are several good solutions out there to the user profile problem so evaluate them all to find the right fit for functionality and budget per your needs.

Do you think Citrix minds stepping on an ecosystem partner? They just stepped on five at one time with this deal. They have done it before with Softricty and others and will continue to do it. They have to evolve (or buy) to survive. It is a legit deal. It will be interesting when they kick out certain profile management ISV partners to leave the program like they did Softricity.

Isn't that the truth? You mean I still have to create and manage profiles with Group Policies or something else? Seems half baked when there are other solutions that can do both initial profile creation and make them portable.

According to their website, Citrix refer to AppSense for the user profile management on XenDesktop?, or so it seems at http://www.citrix.com/English/ps2/products/feature.asp?contentID=1453053 Havent tested it myself but at first glance from a google search("AppSense Xendesktop" gave http://www.appsense.com/platforms/citrix-xen-desktop/ )they seem to answer some of the questions people have been asking like setting up a virtual desktop for different users.. anyone tried it?

Yes, I've tried AppSense an it is an awful lot of overhead and very expensive to do what Script Start (and what they'll soon do) can apparently do without any agents or software to install on the desktop side.

RTO Virtual Profiles is vaporware and like Sepago only does half the job by not doing profile creation (i.e. map drives, printers, etc). They've been marketing it for months and still no download to try. Late, late, late to the game and now no need with the Sepago deal doing the same thing.
