I’m back with another rant and this time it is not about Citrix or VMware and/or even Microsoft. In fact, those companies have nothing at all to do with this rant but I need to get this off my chest as it is long overdue. It is all about “too many clients” and the people that use them. Don’t worry; I will make it short…
I’m trying to get back in to the habit of using Twitter. I want to use it more often to share this and/or that. When I logged in I noticed a slew of direct messages and @douglasabrown messages that I had not responded too. I felt bad and thought the sender might have thought I was ignoring them, which I was not. I thought, I need to use this more, but then I started getting mad.
Why? Why do I get mad about this? Why does it make me want to choke Biz Stone (which is a stupid name by the way)? Simply put, because I have a real job. I’m busy and don’t have time to just sit around and stay “up-to-date” on “yet another communications” tool. I mean, I have IM, where people ping me all day and all night as if I’m in the office browsing for porn. I have a Twitter account, which you can see from the above I’ve been neglecting. I have Facebook, which I actually only use for personal stuff which usually includes rants about what ever pisses me off in the news not relating to technology, except the USA CIO who happens to be a complete fraud. I’ve also been beta testing Google Wave for months too. Then there is the one app that remains open 24/7 on my PC, only to be shut down during reboots, and that is E-Mail. What ever happened to just emailing a person? Don’t you dare Twitter me and think it is going to be faster than E-Mail. It works. I can send you files, pictures, videos, links, short messages, long messages, middle sized messages, and anything at all that sits on a computer. Nothing is wrong with it. It is open all day long on most people’s machines and it simply works. So why the heck do I need twitter, Facebook, IM, Google Wave, and a slew of other crap to “bring us closer together”? I don’t and you don’t either…
I must ask, who are these people who have time for all this? How is this making our lives “easier”? It is NOT, it is wasting tons of people’s time. Heck, I read once that an average employee spends over 10% of their day on Facebook. Really? Wow, I would want my money back if I was the boss. But that is not all. Add the amount of time a person Twitters, IMs, and now Google Waves. (Is that what you call it? I’m waving at you. “Look at me, I’m special.” Now please will someone gag me with a spoon?) I bet an average employee does not even work 50% of their day due to these “time saves”. What a joke. Get to work and use E-Mail people... Don’t call me either, E-MAIL ME! (dbrown@dabcc.com) that is the best way to get ahold of me as I’ve been using E-Mail for a LONG, LONG time and it WORKS. I don’t need a new client Biz or Google guys.
Just a word to the wise, nobody better leave a comment saying, “but you can be notified on new messages via E-Mail” Then why do I need Twitter and Facebook? I have E-MAIL and you are telling me to use E-MAIL to stay up to date with competitors to E-MAIL…. Really? No you are not, you better not.
Also, nobody better leave a comment telling me that it is so simple on a cell phone because SO IS E-MAIL…. Nothing beats it people… NOTHING…
I think we should also look at the people who do tweet, use Facebook, and IM all the time as people that need more work added to their plate vs. thinking they are the ones that know it all. How could they if they spend half their day on social networks? Not possible unless at night all they do is study and the rest of the work they blew off during the day while “Twittering”. I think I need to develop a simple app that monitors your current, in focus, app to see if it is Twitter, IM, Facebook, and/or Google Wave, and then when it realizes one of those clients are “in focus” it starts / continues adding to a timer which counts the total time someone is running those wasteful clients and then sends an E-Mail to their boss with the grand total of wasted time each and every day. I bet you would see a lot less Twitter and Facebook usage!!! Good... That is what we need. Get back to E-Mail and work people and stop sending crap in 140 chars. It is driving me batty, can you tell?
Oh, one last thing – the only people who really need Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks are the marketers. So you are being marketed to and don’t even know it, or you do and just don’t care. One of the two. For the rest, I think I already said what I think. You need more work.
Well, that is my rant for today. Hope you have a twitter of a day...
No… before I go, I will summarize my rant in 140 chars for those of you who have lost the ability to read anything longer.
Enough Is Enough – Twitter, Facebook, Google Wave is a Waste of Time - E-Mail Works - Top Twitter and Facebook Users Are Lazy - Suck It
