The Microsoft mythbusting team of David Greschler and Edwin Yuen, who brought us the Top 10 VMware Myths video, are back! This time the duo compares Microsoft Virtualization to VMware on the basis of cost! They go in to a bit of detail around the additional layers of virtualization VMware adds to the stack vs. the way Microsoft's Hyper-V does it and how VMware justifies the cost for this additional layer. Which Microsoft calls a vTax! Microsoft's view is the additional cost for VMware is due to the fact VMware requires four layers - hardware, virtualization, operating system and applications vs. the three layers Microsoft has - hardware, operating system with virtualization, and applications.

David and Edwin discuss the following three items:

Silverlight tax? OS tax? -

I guess I should wear a shirt that says (no silverlight tax) to watch the video. I mean why do I need silverlight when I alread have flash installed? It takes up my valuable system ram and hard disk space.

The same for an operating system tax, I mean, I can just download any linux distribution and not have overhead costs of an operating system. I can then focus on the true costs of the application I really need.

I like this kind of thing as much as I like VMware going on about this "cloud" that everyone is obsessed with. It's junk!

I don't usually use memory overcommitment either, but I agree with the other poster before me. Microsoft will be quick to say how wonderfull memory overcommitment is when they integrate it. They also fail to mention that overcommitment works much better when shared page RAM is in use, reducing the memory use by VM's by keeping only one copy of identical RAM pages from multiple VM's.

This marketing material reminds me of the old Windows NT 4.0 days when Microsoft went around telling everyone that NT 4.0 domains were easier to manage than Novel 4.1 NDS Directories. It was a complete load of crud, but we all ended up on Windows anyways.

In both of the previous examples, it is easier just to add a role to a Windows server than to use a competitive product and set it all up properly to begin with. Unfortunately when you get into the world of dozens or hundreds of servers, the managment tools leave you managing things one server at a time again.

Microsoft is getting better at this, but I still feel that they are more interested in making a one off job easy than making a complete solution achievable. It really is a shame. Microsoft has so many brilliant programmers.

Can Microsoft Even Spell Virtualization? -

The day after VMware launches one of the most revolutionary IT products of all time – a technology that is going to transform the very nature of a data center, Microsoft comes out with the second segment in its “myth busters” series. The fact that Microsoft misspells “virtulization” in the title of the video is a metaphor for their approach to the technology. Microsoft’s January 2009 Technical Case Study promotes a goal of 50% internal virtualization using Hyper-V http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc974012.aspx. In contrast, VMware’s vSphere facilitates 100% virtualization, as VMware has demonstrated itself http://sessions.vmworld.com/mgrCourse/launchCourse.cfm?mL_method=player. Since the bulk of virtualization cost is incurred up-front in design, storage, network, hosts, etc., the marginal cost of virtualizing additional servers declines – meaning the greatest savings come from 100% virtualization.

Hyper-V requires twice the hardware as VMware to run the same number of VMs, meaning twice the rack space, power, cooling, maintenance, HBAs and network ports. Gartner says that it costs more now to power a server over its lifespan than to cool it down. So factor in all of these costs plus the copy of Windows Server required up front, and Hyper-V is almost certainly more expensive than vSphere in any case. But even if it weren’t, even if it were free – why would any organization risk the opportunity to save hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in order to save a few thousand dollars per virtualization host by deploying a hypervisor that is clearly inferior in every reasonable metric from performance to reliability to manageability to industry support. To use Microsoft’s own apt analogy when combating Linux, even a free Hyper-V would be free like a puppy.

They might not be able to spell virtualization and/or they made a typeo but at least they know that you don't need a:
"copy of Windows Server required up front,"
Hyper-V is not Windows Server 2008 and is it's own CD/build/download that is 100% free. No need to buy it.

No, this is definitely FUD and nothing more.
I don't understand why Microsoft has to bash VMware since they should be embracing them. Virtualisation, regardless of the flavour, promotes the deployment of Windows because spawning a VM is a hundred times easier than standing a physical Windows machine. Windows licensing, as we know, has been a cash-cow for M$ for decades now.
