Today's enterprises are global, networked organizations comprised of employees, suppliers, partners, and customers. Key business decisions are made everywhere within this extended enterprise - headquarters, customer sites, hotel rooms, branch offices, etc.
The goals of the CEO, CFO and COO are to increase revenue and efficiency while managing risk. The CIOs mission is to support growth by building an on-demand enterprise, giving the members of the extended enterprise flexible, secure access to all the information they need.
On-demand access to information is vital to:
- Branch office expansion
- Mergers and acquisitions
- Streamlining supply chains
The one that stands out more today, is increasing employee mobility
In a competitive environment, customer relationship management is critical to building customer loyalty and a sustainable competitive advantage. Mobile employees are one of the most important elements of a successful CRM strategy, and information demand has become more challenging to satisfy. These mobile employees have become more dynamic and unpredictable, using an array of access devices like the Apple iPhone. Ensuring information is readily available to mobile workers regardless of where they are makes them more productive and responsive to customers. With the rapid proliferation of the Apple iPhone and its ever-increasing presence inside the enterprise, it would be a grave mistake for IT management to ignore this trend and not provide secure access to corporate resources from these devices. To that end, Citrix has answered the customer call for an ICA client for the iPhone. Citrix has always had the phrase, "anytime, anywhere, any device". This rings more true today with the Citrix Receiver for iPhone.
We all know Citrix has been working on this client and has even demo'd it to an audience at last year's Synergy event in Houston. I've had the privilege of testing a beta release of the Citrix Receiver for iPhone for the past few weeks and I'm very pleased with the performance. Since I'm in Iowa, I think this was a great test scenario because cell coverage here often leaves a lot to be desired. Here in Des Moines we are on a 3G network and the performance is spectacular to the XenApp infrastructure in Amazon's EC2 cloud. If I'm outside of Des Moines and in surrounding areas of Iowa - which is often - the performance is satisfactory. I'm able to access applications, data, and resources while at customer sites, in the car - although I don't condone it while driving. I'm truly more productive with my iPhone and the Citrix Receiver and my bag is a lot lighter since I don't have the burden of my laptop.
The Receiver will eventually be available through the app store when it is released to the public, but even with the beta release it was very easy to install and configure.
